Why Should You Hire Professional for Gym Floor Refinishing experts?

Gym floor refinishing requires several steps that the average contractor could find difficult. Unfortunately, even small mistakes can damage floors, leading to costly repairs. Instead of running this risk, many people and institutions choose to hire professional floor refinishers. If you have any questions about whether you can complete the following process without making any mistakes, you should consider hiring a professional, too.

Preparing the Gym Floor for Refinishing

It is important to clean the gym floor completely before refinishing it. Dirt and small bits of debris could negatively impact the gym floor refinishing process so that the floor does not look its best. Debris could even cause deep scratches that you will have to repair.

Starting With the Drum Sander

After cleaning the floor, run a drum sander with 20-grit sandpaper across the hardwood. The sander should head in a straight line. Once you cover the distance from one wall to the other, turn around and head in the opposite direction, overlapping the first pass by 3 inches.

Using a Disc Sander

You will probably find that you cannot reach some spots with the drum sander. Most of the machines are too big to reach into corners and edges. Use a disc sander to reach those areas so that the floor’s entire surface has been sanded.

A Second Pass With the Drum Sander and Disc Sander

Replace the 20-grit sandpaper with 50-grit paper and sand the entire floor again. 50-grit paper is much finer, so it will make the floor smoother. Again, you must use a disc sander to get any parts that you could not reach with the large drum sander.

At this point in the gym floor refinishing process, you will have a substantial amount of dust covering the floor’s surface. Use a large sweeper to remove all of this dust before continuing to the next stage.

Applying the Stain

People who make mistakes while refinishing gym floors usually do so during the sanding process. Applying the stain, however, requires more physical labor that can exhaust the average person, especially when working on large hardwood floors.

To apply the stain, use a rag and work in 2-foot areas to make sure you cover the entire floor. Let the stain soak into the wood for about 15 minutes before moving on to the next area. Once you have stained the entire floor, let it sit for at least 8 hours.

The Finishing Touches

After the stain dries, you need to repaint any lines used for sports like basketball and racquetball. A court line tape machine will help you paint these lines accurately. Allow the paint at least 12 hours to dry. Then you can apply a sealer with the same method you used to stain the floor. Let the sealer sit for at least two days before using the floor.

Given all of these steps, you will spend several days on a gym floor refinishing project, especially if you don’t have experience working with the equipment. To save time and get the job done right, hire a professional that will do the work for you.
