Gym Floor Maintenance

There are six steps to a proper daily maintenance plan. First, sweep the floor daily using a properly treated dust mop. Second, wipe up any spills on the surface. Third, make sure the air conditioning system is working properly; the indoor relative humidity should be 35% to 50% year round. Too much moisture causes abnormal expansion which can lead to cupping or buckling of your floor or the wood will shrink leaving separations between the floor strips. Fourth, remove heel marks the floor marks with an approved floor cleaner. Fifth, inspect the floor for tightening and shrinkage, check for water leakage around doors and widows. Six, protect the floor when moving heavy portable equipment, wheels can create dents on the floor.

There are four steps that should never be allowed. Never shut down the ventilation system in the facility for a long period of time. Never use house hold cleaning products, this can be harmful to the floor finish and can make the floor sticky and slippery. Never use clean a auto scrubber with only water, too much water will seep in to the expansion voids and may cause the floor to buckle. Never attempt to repair a gym floor with out first contacting a gym floor professional.

* Photo of a gym floor had not been properly cleaned was not being cleaned properly and several years have passed since the gym floor was re-coated. The floor had no finish top coating and was down to the bare wood, at this point the only solution was a full sanding and refinishing. This cost the school the extra expense, if the gym floor was properly maintained then a full sanding would not have been necessary for at least 8 years.
